The story makes me think about the balance among family, marriage and career. There are some movie stills in aceshowbiz,

The costumes are beautiful, also the buildings. The pictures of Gerold (David Wenham) are beautiful. I like both novel and movie!

I just finished subtitling the movie version of Pope Joan in Dutch (for the Belgian theatres) and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm really happy I was asked to do so. Such an inspirational book and such a great movie! Wishing you a lot of success with the movie and the book--

Thank you, Donna, for such an insightful conversation by speakerphone last evening with my ONE Great Book Club meeting. That was truly a wonderful experience-- listening to you tell about the derivation, creation and struggles with crafting such a readable historical novel.

I appreciate your prompt response to my request to chat with our reading group and rest assured that all of our members will "go forth to spread the word" about Pope Joan :-)

I just realised that the reason I haven't heard anything from you since I signed up in Feb 2007 is that I changed my email address. I've just resubscribed. It's still by far the best novel I've read on Pope Joan. I'm delighted the
film has gone ahead. Any idea when it might be released in the UK? I hope to review it when it's out.

From the Author: The "subscription" David refers to is my "Update Newsletters". If you'd like to receive monthly updates about movie news and the release of my next novel, add your email address.

Thanks so much for this website. I've read Pope Joan ("La Papisa" in Spanish), and I just loved it.
I was totally impressed by the history and by this woman. I told all my friends about the book and
they also loved it. Now I'm waiting to watch the movie; we are very excited waiting for it.
A part of that is that I'm fan of David Wenham, so that is an extra gift.
Thanks so much for your wonderful book!

I read Pope Joan about a year ago at the urging of a friend. I loved this
book and suggested it to our book club. Our club enjoys a variety of
literature, especially books that have strong female characters and a great
story. Pope Joan fit the bill exactly!

Will the Pope Joan Movie that is opening in Germany, be in English, or German? I can’t wait to see it either way!

From the Author: In Germany, as with most movies, Pope Joan has dubbed into German. But it was filmed in English! (John Goodman, David Wenham, Iain Glen and the other British and American actors speak no German!). In the U.S. and most other countries, it will be in English--exactly as intended and as filmed.

I feel that Pope Joan, the novel, is one of the best books I have ever read. The story leapt off the page, and I am sure that the images and sounds of Hollywood will make the Movie Version of Pope Joan leap off the screen. This was an amazing book, an amazing story, and Academy Award material.

Pope Joan was given to me by a mutual friend of ours. She and the book have encouraged me to move forward in my world and to encourage the women around me to do likewise.

Joan reminds us the quality of our lives depends on the quality of our thoughts and that chasing our dreams, albeit difficult, is worth it.

Many of our book club members are professors and K-12 teachers. We are falling in love with Joan and are dedicated to getting the word out about her excellent example of courage, dedication, and the power of an inquisitive and learned mind.

Donna, thank you so much for talking to our book group tonight at Brenda's. It was so much fun to hear your thoughts and experiences pertaining to Pope Joan! I so enjoyed reading Pope Joan. I have one more question I would like to hear your thoughts on why Joan's father married Joan's mother since he conseidered her a heathen? Did he hope to convert her or did he just like the control he had over her? And then there is the flip question...why did Joan's mother decide to marry him? Again...it was so very delightful speaking with you, and I look forward to the movie and your next
book.

"Pope Joan" proved to be the perfect book for our group, and the novel inspired one of

The founder of the book club, Susan Coffey, read Pope Joan, loved it and  assigned it to our group. The historical significance of a woman as early as the 9th century being that empowered with such brilliance
to give to the world is a powerful attraction to reading this historical novel. We would love having a speakerphone chat with you to learn your insight and details of how such massive research was done.

What a fabulous, well written and intriguing novel that was suggested for a
new book club. Our meeting is in early November, and I am looking forward to
everyone's comments and opinions.

I am glad to have all the information in the "Author's Note" in the back to fill my endless
curiosity of Joan and her life. I believe in her!

I am curious as to how many men you get as readers and what their reactions are, in
this fabulous modern-day society we live in. Imagine those times - yes we
are not equal and never will be, but how we have come along!

Thanks for your dedication, Donna! I am so glad I traveled this journey with you.

Pope Joan was recommended to one of our members by her sister and she read it and
thought we would all enjoy it. I also follow The Book Club Cookbook website
and liked your recipe to accompany the novel. We often try to tie our meal or appetizers in with
what we are reading. I was a history major, and I had never heard about the
female pope and can't wait to read your book and speak with you. The
majority of our book club are elementary school teachers and we often have
our students contact favorite authors and we thought we should lead by
example by inviting you to participate in our book club discussion...

I just couldn’t resist reaching out to tell you that I adored your novel.  I had trouble putting it down, so much so that my five-year-old daughter asked, “Mommy, why are you ALWAYS reading that book?” The combination of meticulously-researched historical detail paired with a beautifully-written, compelling story was irresistible! Congratulations – I can’t imagine how it must feel to generate a book that is so outstanding.
I am looking forward to the movie and your next novel.

Despite the melatonin I'd taken because I still couldn't get to sleep at
around midnight, I was riveted from the first page of Pope Joan!
I've always loved reading (my mother was a children's lit specialist and
served on both the Newbury and Caldecott selection committees). But only rarely
am I as magnetized to a book as I was yours. One other book - Davita's Harp - has captured me so
completely, with such fully realized lead and support characters.

I'm now a constant fan of your writing and can't wait to look into your university texts, as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you for such wonderful writing!

What a treat to read your Pope Joan! I belong to two book clubs and always
enjoy a book assignment about a strong, memorable female character that is
based in medieval or, in Pope Joan's case, earlier times. I highly respect
the research time that went into the creation of your book. Books like Pope
Joan, The Red Tent and the Welsh trilogy Here Be Dragons paint an amazing
vision of women who were empowered and driven long before it became easy for
them to do so. I can hardly wait to see the film! Thanks for a lovely and
fascinating read.

forward to her next.

One of my closest friends recommended Pope Joan. I read it
and enjoyed the novel considerably. I have three purposes for choosing Pope Joan for my book group. The first is that I have a book review web site (CantPutDown.com) that I am slowly getting off the
ground and wanted a book that I knew I could write about as one that I
couldn't put down. Secondly, I write book reviews for our local town paper
and needed a great book to recommend. Thirdly, I am in a book club and it
was my turn to choose a book, so I decided to re-read Pope Joan. Without a doubt
I knew it would be a fabulous book to discuss. I am thrilled with the potential opportunity to chat with Donna by speakerphone.

Pope Joan has been influential to me due to the novel's rare strong female character who is not at all manipulative. She learns how to survive and people respect her for that. You have to look beyond the religious controversy and respect her for what she is.

I am so excited about POPE JOAN. Being a teacher I constantly am "advertising" the books I read and passing on the ones I read as "important MUST READS of the month!" Well, POPE JOAN was so compelling to me I actually carry it around school and promote it to the parents and staff. I've had numerous people say they have to run out that day and buy it. POPE JOAN is my number one favorite and I'm sure it will hold this place for a long time. I can't wait to see the movie. Many kudos for a superb novel and timely piece of history.

One of our book group members is going on a trip to Rome in the fall, and came across "Pope Joan"
when she was searching on the internet for historical novels set in Rome. She proposed that we choose it for our next meeting.

I had already read the novel, and was on the verge of suggesting it myself! We like to read books that generate good discussion, either because they touch on important topics or because we can all relate personally to some aspect of the characters and the story. I think Pope Joan qualifies on both counts! We would love to discuss the book with you by speakerphone if you have room in your schedule!

And while reading your book I was wondering if you had David in your mind while writing it. Thanks a lot for the wonderful novel and I look so much forward to the movie.

Our Tea & Books group is made up of American teachers, living in Germany, and English speaking Germans. We met for tea and book recommendations last week. After recommending Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End", someone recommended "Pope Joan". We all gasped with interest
in the idea of a woman as pope. We left with hugs and a commitment to discuss "Pope Joan" this month.

I heard about Pope Joan on an online book club I belong to. I cannot remember if it was one of our book selections (I never participate in the discussions, just get ideas for books to read!) or a book someone there mentioned...but your novel caught my eye, so I bought it.

Being raised a Catholic, I had not heard about the only female pope until a few years ago. I was very curious and tried to find information, but very little was available. Since my name is also Joan, I was especially eager to find out what I could. When I visited Italy a couple of years ago, our tour guide did tell us a little about Joan and we walked the street where she paraded.

I am very anxious to read your novel. I also belong to a book club and if I like "Pope Joan", I will recommend it as one of our reads. Thank you.

The audiobook, which is WONDERFUL, is still in the final stages of production (editing) so it has not yet been released. I'm listening to the German translation of Pope Joan (Die Päpstin) on audio book. I can only say I love the book, which really takes the reader into that world. While listening, I could empathize with how a girl or a woman felt in this misogynistic society, and I even cried a bit in the first chapter for Joan and her poor mum. Your novel evokes feelings of sympathy and amazement in the reader. It just touches one's heart. Wonderful novel. Thank you!

A couple of our book group members had heard of Pope Joan and wanted to read it. I read the quotations from the back cover, and everyone was sold! We are a group of middle school teachers (I am the librarian). Our 8th grade studies the Middle Ages, so a couple of us are interested in reading about the time period anyway. This is our first year as a group, and we were looking for titles that are a bit different from our previous choices, most of which our group considers "women's titles," so we thought this book represented a bit of a departure. We are also excited that there will be a movie!

I just posted my review on Pope Joan and I LOVED it. What an amazing story! I felt a link with Joan while reading; she has now taken her place so close to my heart. I could never forget her now. Even the reader questions, your responses were so right and fitting. You can find the review at

I hope I did Joan justice. I could not believe that in your Q&A afterwards, you included the quote from George Santayana, "Those who do not study history are condemned to repeat it". I have lived my life by that quote. You truly are a sister lover of historical fiction, also a kindred spirit proved by your use of the quote. I can not wait for your next book and the movie. I excitedly await more, lots more! Thank You

I read the Hebrew translation of Pope Joan, and I liked it very much.

Now I am looking for the book in Italian. Was it translated to Italian? If so, where can get a copy on the net?

Author's Reply: "La Papessa" was published by the Italian press Piemme; I'm not sure it's still in print (it's a Vatican press, so, perhaps understandably, they did little to promote the book). To find it on the net, do a search that includes the title and name of the press.

I came across Donna Woolfolk Cross' book title when searching for available info on Pope Joan. I have read a book titled "Papessa Joanna" written by a  Greek priest, Emanuel Rhoidis. His book was published first in 1866. Rhoidis includes in the bibliography all of his sources for the recorded existence of  Pope Joan.(Including archives from the Library of the Vatican.) I've read the book translated in Bulgarian and published there in 1962.

When living in Toledo, I decided to get from the local library a book: "History of the popes". At the check-out counter, a person dressed in Catholic attire showed interest as to my wanting to learn about the popes. He asked me what I needed to know. I answered that I would like to find more about Pope Joan. He looked at me startled and asked: "Just how did you find about that?"

"From an old book, written in Greek" I answered. He left in a hurry. The librarian informed me that I just had spoken with the Bishop!

The chronology of the popes clearly indicates the existence of Pope Joan. Feel free to get in touch with me, if you would like to have more info regarding the documentation about Papessa Joanna.

Author's reply: Thanks, Sonny!  I am well aware of the work of Emmanual Rhoidis, and I reference it in the "Author's Note" at the end of my book.  But I appreciate your sending along this reference!

Congratulations on the new edition and movie for Pope Joan! I'm the guy you met at a Syracuse social
studies conference years ago where we talked through our lunch about Pope Joan.

My tenth grade humanities students at Newark Senior High School in Newark, New York read your book, became an expert on one area (medicine, for example), traced it through your book, and did historical research on it.All students then made a tapestry that was put together to be hung in the school for the following classes to see.

You liked the idea and even came to our school for a round table discussion with our students. We continue to read your book, and the tapestries live on. A side note - Three years ago my wife and I were at a wedding in Wilmington, North Carolina. While at a book store, we saw three young women looking at your book. I couldn't hold myself back and told them all about you and the research and how you came to our school.
They did buy the book! You truly deserve the accolades that will come with the new edition and the movie; long overdue.

Pope Joan is a wonderful choice for school groups because of its strong theme of empowerment through learning. Should your class (or school) select the novel, Donna will be happy to chat by speakerphone, answering student questions about life in the ninth century, women's history, the writing process, differences between a novel and a screenplay--or pretty much whatever they want to know! I think she may remember me, Susie Campbell, from School District 16 in Miramichi, and also from the ladies book club in a little village called Tabusintac…

I do love the “quirky” part of the "Walk the Red Carpet" offer, but isn’t that so Donna Woolfolk Cross?

I will certainly buy the new edition when it arrives on the Miramichi. I believe it will be my 8th purchase of this book, as I bought it for several teachers and friends, too!

I went immediately to Borders at lunch today to purchase the new edition Pope Joan. The store only had two copies, and those on a shelf in the middle of the store! I asked them where were all the copies and the nice big display? They said, "Oh it's just a little paperback."   I said, "Actually, it's the best book I've read in the last few years and you really should get an order in here fast. It's set to be a motion picture in October! What are you people thinking???  This book is so wonderful that it deserves a huge display in the front entrance!"

I certainly hope that the other stores around the nation gave better support that the one on Washtenaw in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I can hardly wait until the movie! Congratulations on a masterpiece!

Pope Joan is an auction item dinner/book for a fundraiser for my son's school. I chose Pope Joan for many reasons, most importantly, being raised Catholic and leaving the church because of the lack of female
faces in the priesthood. I was so excited and amazed to learn that there had been a female pope! I want to share this knowledge with others and am grateful that a movie is being made from the book so that Pope Joan will become common knowledge.

Author's reply: As of June 9, 2009, Pope Joan was re-released by Three Rivers Press, alleviating the temporary difficulty in ordering the book.  Learn more about the new edition of Pope Joan here.

Thank you for calling in to join the conversation with our book club. My daughter has been
home for a few weeks after graduating from BYU and was looking for a good
book to read. It was her first "leisure" read after college, and she loved it!
She joined us last night for book club. I was the one who asked you what
you would ask Joan if you were to meet her in person. The reason I did is
that I do first person interpretions (in costume) of some amazing Utah
pioneer women and I have things I want to know about their lives that I
can't find in historical information. I believe I will meet them in the
next life and I have many questions I'd like to ask them. Thank you for
bringing Joan to life for your readers. I look forward to the movie!

I was browsing for a good read at a book sale a few days ago and I found
Pope Joan. I immediately felt attached to the book; that's why I bought it
right away! It is beautifully written and full of life. Joan is indeed an inspiration.
Can't wait to watch the film! I hope it can be as wonderful as the book
itself! Name:

I found Pope Joan in a famous bookstore in Bethlehem. I didn't think my bookclub would like it, but they all agreed to give it a try. It's now their favorite book since we started the club--and we will begin our ninth year in
September! The book draws you in from page 1. You can visualise the setting the whole way through the book. I read the book a few years ago and I can still see the story in my head. I tell everyone to read the book or else they will be missing one of the best stories ever written!

On my way to a plane flight, I stopped by Barnes and Noble, and got a copy of Pope Joan. By the time I reached my destination, I was half way through! I had to ration it, because of the thought of actually being done and not having anything else to read!

You now have a new (HUGE) fan!!! I can hardly wait for the movie, Dare I dream of an epic--like Dr. Zhivago?

I have chosen Pope Joan for an optional summer reading selection for our students and would like them to have the opportunity to talk with Donna when school starts back in the fall. I think our students will enjoy the book and I know they will enjoy talking with Donna. I hope she will be available to talk with them. I left work early on Friday not feeling well. I was excited at the opportunity to have a couple of hours to read more of ‘Pope Joan’. I find myself not wanting to put the book down. Anyway, we had a storm and lost power for 48 hours – good thing it was spring rather than winter! That didn’t stop me…we found the book lights and I found myself reading in the dark while I was reading about Joan reading in the dark. I have been touched and overwhelmed. We have lost power many times, often due to ice storms; however, there was never such an impact to my thoughts.

As a Roman Catholic woman who could never understand the exclusion of women

Pope Joan was recommended by an avid reader. Our group likes books about strong
women. I could not put the book down; it is one of the best I've EVER read!
I could practically smell the stench of the sewers and see the blood
splatter. I loved how it moved quickly but said so much; there are no
wasted words just to make it book length. I was amazed at the research that
must have gone into it. I've never read a historical fiction book that
strove any harder to come close to the facts. Thank you!

(Posted on the book and school group chat request page.)  I am a flight attendant. During a long flight to India, I was chatting with a co-worker about her book club's selections and she recommended Pope Joan as their top choice. On my next flight to India, I read the entire fabulous story and so I chose it for our group. In our book club there is no vote on books; we each make a selection when our turn comes and everyone reads it. I selected your book for all the reasons stated in your guest book. I cannot add anymore illumination or originality to those wonderful comments from other readers.

I am very tempted to just raise my hand in the air and scream, "Pick me, pick me!" like I did when i was little, but instead I will be more mature. I am just so excited about the potential of having a speaker phone

I enjoyed Pope Joan and thought you might enjoy learning a little bit about Charley Parkhurst, the first woman to vote in California, besides being a first-class, one-eyed stagecoach driver!

A note from Donna:  For those who think it's impossible for a woman to pass as a man, Charley is yet another in the very long list of women who have successfully pulled off this disguise. Just as with Pope Joan, no one knew that Charley was a woman until "he" died and they went to prepare "his" body for burial. For other examples of successful women cross-dressers, see the "Author's Note" at the end of my Pope Joan.

Hello!
Thank you very much for writing such an interesting book! I enjoyed it a
lot. I have a class in school in which I have to write a research paper and I
decided to write it about the question of whether Joan's is true
or not regarding your book.
Now I am looking for other sources that will help me answer
this question. I already found a book written by Peter Stanford but I am
hoping that I can find more literature.
I read the epilog in your book and thought that you probably used other
literature as well. It would be very very nice if you could write me back
and tell me which books or other sources you used!

(Posted on the book and school group chat request page.)  After moving to a new area, I joined a book club where each member recommends a book she has already read. Not knowing what to recommend, I asked a friend who belongs to several book clubs to suggest the "best" book that all of her clubs had done over the past two years.

Without hesitation she said "Pope Joan". After I read the book there was little doubt that this would be the book that i would recommend for my yearly pick. Everyone found the topic fascinating and all gave a resounding "YES" to adding it to our list.

There are so many questions one can generate from the reading. And the historical significance is fascinating. I really did not think that this could be based on reality until I read the information at the end of the book. It makes the subject matter that much more poignant.

I was thrilled to find out about the opportunity to chat with the author by speakerphone while doing research for our upcoming discussion. I know that my request is late in coming, but I hope you can still join us!

Pope Joan for my English class, and because of it I was actually interested in reading for the first time. So, I just wanted to tell you again how grateful to you I am. Pope Joan is still my favorite book because of that!
And now because of you, anything by Jane Austen is a close second. I just really wanted to say thank you again. I don't know what I would do without reading or books in general, and I really do owe it all to you...and I guess to my teacher who had us read Pope Joan!! Thank you!! =)

On behalf of the Bedford Book Club, I would personally like to thank
you for joining us by speakerphone and providing us with an hour of your valuable time to
answer questions, teach, enlighten, as well as entertain us with all
of the
inside information of the writing of this fabulous book. Many of us
are convinced that Joan indeed wore the papal crown. It was sad for us to finish the book. It was one of those
reads that you mourn when you have turned the last page. There were
so many questions that followed. Tonight you answered most of them,
and then some.

Women have not come as far as we like to believe and someday someone
will take on the task of writing about the twenty-first century and
the women of the future will shudder much as we have about the ninth
century. Wonder who the heroine will be for that author yet to write
about our time in history.

We wish you the very best with your new novel as well as the movie,
and by all means, if there is a premier here in Raleigh NC, please let
us know, and we would love nothing more than to attend with you , and
show you some southern hospitality and take you around town. We will
all be sure sto go to www.popejoan.com to keep posted about the
upcoming novel and the Pope Joan movie.

You and Joan have become a good friend to those of us in Bedford.
Be well and God Bless
